Congratulations to Mary Ann Sheuer--fellow blogger (at Great Kid Books) and winner of LOLA'S FANDANGO! Although the following giveaway is over, I hope you will stay to enjoy the post.
Lola's Fandango
Author: Anna Witte
Illustrator: Micha Archer
Lola discovers an old pair of flamenco shoes in her mother's closet and embarks on a wonderful journey of discovery--not just of flamenco dancing but also of confidence and of family bonding. A narrated CD version of the story includes a bit of flamenco music and really helps highlight the spirit of the book. Although not being released until October 2011, this book is worth the wait! You can read more detailed reviews of Lola's Fandango here and here. (Available in English or Spanish.)
The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories
Authors: Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple
Illustrator: Rebecca Guay
A book for all ages, The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories is an 80-page compilation of six famous stories that have been made into classical ballets. Each story is accompanied by a full page of factual information, and the end of the book includes a more comprehensive history of ballet. A narrated CD allows you listen to musical excerpts from the different ballets while enjoying the book's gorgeous illustrations. Click here to listen to the story of Coppelia. (Available in English.)
The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories
Authors: Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple
Illustrator: Helen Cann
The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories is a 99-page collection of eight delightful folktales from eight cultures, held together by the common theme of dance. The front matter includes an introduction to each folktake and a brief history of dance from the culture in which the story is set. The back matter contains more specific information about each dance. Like its companion The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories, this book is accompanied by a lovely narrated CD. Click here to listen to a dance story from Japan. (Available in English.)
The Animal Boogie
Author: Debbie Harter
Illustrator: Debbie Harter
Published just over a decade ago, The Animal Boogie has already become a Barefoot Books classic. The accompanying sing-along CD makes the simple text, which inspires movement and reads like song lyrics, especially infectious. Rumor has it that this book is popular among dance and creative movement teachers who work with young children. Here's a sneak peak! (Available in English or Spanish.)

I would like to win The Animal Boogie because my young children need a little movement in the classroom. We love books!!!!
I am so excited to see the story of Lola discovering her flamenco roots. I am a flamenco dancer and am excited to see more literature developing on the family element inherant in ethnic dance. Owning this book would enhance my library of dance boks that I use in my dance program of flamenco, tap and yoga geared for chikren of all ages and abilities.
ReplyDeleteLola's Fandango for sure!! :) Awesome giveaway!

Hi Kerry! What a truly awesome giveaway. I would choose the Barefoot Book of Dance Stories - primarily because I heart Jane Yolen and I love everything that she has written. I think I bought five of her books during the recent Singapore Library Warehouse Sale - and the title speaks to me for some reason. Thanks for hosting this giveaway and Happy Blogiversary!! =)

Although they all look fabulous, I have to say the Spanish version of Lola's Fandango would fit well with a language theme I'm working on right now.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you at BookTalk.
I'm at gmail under the name wrappedinfoilblog.
What wonderful picture books on dancing! Love them all. If I'm not too late put me in for the Bare Foot Dance Stories. :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your anniversary! I love the focus of your blog and look forward to reading more. Our students, especially young ones, love reading about dancing. Our school library would be thrilled with any of these, but especially Lola's Fandango!
ReplyDeleteAanya and I loved the "Barefoot book of ballet stories". We listened to the story of Cinderella and lved the narration. We would love to win a copy of that book in the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteOh what a fun collection of books! How does one choose? I'd like the "Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories". I was a Ballet Dancer and would love to share this with my little girl! Thanks so much for doing this!

I would love to win a copy of The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories. It sounds delightful and the fact that it represents more than one culture is wonderful. Also as we move to more contemporary themes, we are somehow bereft of the charm of folktales and that just adds to my interest about this title. I don't have children and will probably give it to my niece, but not before I read it myself :)

Hi! We'd love to read all of them, but our two favourite books are Lola's fandango and The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories. Thanks!

The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories looks absolutely amazing. I love Jane Yolen, but had not been introduced (until now) to Rebecca Guay - what lovely artwork! When my children were young, they loved a book with CD we had of Camile Saint- Saens "The Carnival of the Animals". The combination of music, illustrations, and stories are unbeatable in making stong impressions on children's minds and imaginations!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely giveaway. I'd love a copy of The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories. We get so little quality western classical music and almost no ballet in India - this sounds like a lovely way to introduce people of all ages to the beauty of ballet.
ReplyDeleteThank you all so much for entering my giveaway and for letting me learn a little bit more about each of you and what type of books you enjoy. I was especially happy to see comments from so many different book lovers and from so many different places. I wish all of you could have won, but unfortunately we only have one book to give away. And the winner is.... Mary Ann Sheuer. Congratulations, Mary Ann! Barefoot Books will soon be sending you a copy of LOLA'S FANDANGO!
