A December of Doreen.... and a Dog!

Picture book author Doreen Cronin may be best known for her book Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type, which was named a 2001 Caldecott honor book and started her prolific career as a children's writer. However, Cronin is the author of 13 additional picture books, plus a chapter book, and is also juggling a handful of additional projects that will hopefully hit bookshelves soon. You can find an up-to-date list of her books here.

I decided to feature "A December of Doreen" on my blog for a couple of reasons. First of all, I thought it had kind of a nice ring to it! But more importantly, I wanted to feature some of Cronin's movement-themed picture books, particularly a series of three books that would make great accompaniments to any movement-based class for very young children. With single-word titles that say it all, Wiggle, Bounce, and Stretch are simple, humorous books that are bound to get the little ones moving and smiling--all with the help of an adorable dog (drawn by illustrator Scott Menchin) that you'll get to know a little better over the next few weeks.

So stay tuned for a month of fun posts about the books, including a guest post by Angela Moorad from OMazing Kids Yoga and an interview with Doreen Cronin herself. I'll also list the posts here as they go live. I'm super excited and hope you are, too!

  1. cool. i look forward to your posts. I do love her Click, Clack, Moo Series. I was also very impressed with her chapter book "The Trouble with Chickens", she did an amazing job with the characters especially the protagonist's voice.

  2. Thanks, Darshana. I actually just checked out a gazillion of her books from the library to see if there were any more I should cover, but I decided to stick with Bounce, Wiggle, and Stretch (and maybe one more) for now. Love the performance theme in Dooby Dooby Moo, though. And haven't read The Trouble with Chickens yet. Forgot to look for that one in the chapter book section, but now I'll have to check it out!

  4. Are there any other Click, Clack Moo books, I don't think its this one that I've read. Can't wait for your interview with Doreen Cronin!

  5. Hi, Catherine. Yep, there are a few more books with the same characters: 1) Dooby Dooby Moo; 2) Thump, Quack, Moo; and 3) Duck for President. Then there's also a counting book called Click, Clack, Splish, Splash and an alphabet book called Click, Clack, Quackity Quack. There are a lot! And now that you mention it, I should probably add a link to her book list to my post. Here's that link, and thanks for your comment! http://www.doreencronin.com/www.doreencronin.com/Books.html

  6. You have an ear for alliteration - I love the title! We are planning on having an art-theme pretty soon, I am sure that I'd be able to make use of quite a number of your recommendations here. :)

  7. Hi, Myra. Thanks for all of your comments today. It's always nice to hear from you! I'll definitely be on the lookout for your art theme. I'm always amazed at how many books you find when you do different themes, especially the fractured fairy tales, which were fascinating to me :)
