Introducing the Read & Romp Roundup!

© Ursula Bruski/www.fotosearch.com

I'm glad you stopped by today because I'm launching something new! The Read & Romp Roundup is going to be a monthly feature in which I invite you to submit your own blog posts that combine picture books or children's poetry with dance, yoga, or other forms of movement. All you have to do is leave a comment with a link to your post, and I'll gather up all the links and summarize them in a new post when the month is over.

I'll accept book reviews, poems, lesson plans, author or illustrator interviews, ideas for dance or yoga classes, and any other creative thoughts you have about combining children's literature and movement for little ones. I'll post about each monthly roundup around the middle of the month, and entries will be open until the last day of that month. So that means you have until January 31st to submit a post for this month! Just leave a link to your post in a comment on this post, and I'll take it from there.

I've realized that several of you blog (at least occasionally) about topics similar to mine, so I thought this would be a fun way to create a small community of bloggers who are integrating children's literature and movement. I also know that many dance teachers, librarians, and parents enjoy combining picture books with movement, so I thought this feature could become a helpful resource for them as well.

So whether you contribute posts to the roundup or just want to stop by from time to time to see what we're up to, I hope you'll enjoy this new feature. As the year continues, I'll be archiving each month's roundup under the "Read & Romp Roundup" tab at the top of my blog.

Please let me know if you have any questions, as I have a feeling we'll have to make up some of the rules as we go along. I'm looking forward to seeing your January posts!

  1. Thank you for doing this! I tried out offering a Music and Movement class at my library this fall, and that has spiralled into being my most popular program and I now have 2 classes back-to-back each week in order to accomodate everyone. I love the ideas I get from this site and look forward to seeing what other great stuff I can learn from everyone else!

  2. Hi, Amy. Awesome! I am so happy to hear you like this idea. I hope that we get a lot of contributors, at least over time. Your class sounds great, too. I would love to hear more about it sometime :)

  5. I have an idea about reviewing a favorite book of my kids. It is a few years old, but combines music and dance in a picture book. Let me know if it is something that you might be interested in.

  6. Hi, Sandi. That sounds great--exactly the kind of thing I had in mind! There are so many great picture books out there with dance (and music) themes, but it will take all of us to cover them all :)

  8. Hi Kerry! First, thanks for stopping by my blog -- I'm so pleased to find your blog, too! It's adorable, and I love the concept. The Read & Romp idea is terrific! My background is in theater rather than dance, but I do try to come up with activities for my poetry videos -- I'll see what I can do in the near future about getting some movement in there. :)

    1. Hi, Renee. Thanks for stopping by here, too! Oooh, that would be fun to include some movement ideas with some of your poetry! Also, have you heard of Poetry Friday? It's a weekly meme where lots of children's poets get together and share original poetry, poems they love, picture books written in rhyme, etc. I have a Poetry Friday button on the left of my blog. You can click it for more information :)

  10. Kerry,

Last year for Katharine Holabird's birthday, Jan. 23 we read her Angelina Ballerina books and went to a dance studio to practice our moves! Here is a link:

  11. Hi, Kerry.

You know that I did not write this post recently, but it is one of my favorites. 10 Children's Books About Dance: http://delightfulchildrensbooks.com/2010/12/10/dance/

The kids and I enjoy reading these books and watching the videos. My son and I get to go see the Alvin Ailey Dance Company perform this spring and are super excited.

    1. Thanks, Amy. That's one of my favorite of your posts, too, though I love them all :) I'm sure that Alvin Ailey will be amazing!! You'll have to let me know how you and your son enjoy it!

  12. Kerry, I really enjoy your site. Thanks so much for collecting & sharing children's literature that lends itself to dance! I could go on & on about books I use in my dance classes but today is a snow day in Seattle, which means I'm home & my books are at school. Since I probably won't have time to post once I'm back to school, I decided to go with a lesson I do for older kids -- just cause I think your roundup is a great idea! http://dancepulse.org/2012/01/19/choreographers-can-be-inspired-by-poetry/

    1. Hi, Meg. Thanks for your nice comment, and I'm so happy you submitted a post! Sorry that your books are snowed in at the school, but glad you had time to write the post while you are off. Stay warm out there!

  13. Hi Kerry, so I think I have managed to post on my blog...I have not really got into blogging yet (would welcome some top tips!) but you have given me some inspiration... so I hope you like my take on 'My Daddy is a Pretzel'. We had great fun today with our 'review'! http://barefootedinburgh.blogspot.com/2012/01/are-you-fish-or-pretzel.html

    1. Hi, Nic. Yeah! So glad that you posted on your blog for the roundup...and that you are going to try to get into blogging more. I've been blogging for a little over a year and have found it challenging but very rewarding. Have met so many nice people that share my passions and am glad I started. I don't have a whole lot of time these days, though, as I know you probably don't either! So I try to post about once a week. On occasion I post more than that, and more often than not I go over a week between posts. I've learned over time not to feel bad if I can't post as often as other people and take part in as many activities in the blogosphere as I'd like. It's fun to check out lots of blogs that are similar to yours and leave comments on posts that resonate with you. It's a good way to make those initial connections and find out what is going on out there! Thanks again for leaving your link!

    2. Hi Kerry! Great idea! This one might be a stretch, but Chicka Chicka Boom Boom has a really unique rhythm to it that I just love http://www.childrens-books-to-love.com/chicka-chicka-boom-boom.html

    3. Hi, Liz! Thanks for stopping by and linking to your review of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Since stretching is a very important part of dance, I will definitely "stretch" to include your review in the round up!
